Paul’s Early Ministry
In this sermon, we dive into Galatians 1:18-24, where Paul continues his defense of his apostleship and shares key details of his early Christian journey. Paul's transformation from a fierce persecutor of the church to a bold preacher of the gospel highlights God's powerful work of grace. Throughout this passage, Paul emphasizes his independence from the Jerusalem apostles, showing that his gospel was directly from Christ and not taught by any human being.
In this sermon, we explore:
1. Paul’s Visit to Jerusalem: Paul met Peter and stayed with him for 15 days. He also saw James, the brother of Jesus, during his time there (Galatians 1:18-19). We discuss what these significant figures might have talked about and how this short visit further validated Paul’s divine mission.
2. Paul’s Oath: To combat false claims about the source of his apostleship, Paul takes an oath in Galatians 1:20, confirming the truthfulness of his testimony. We examine how this oath reflects Paul’s commitment to defend the divine origin of his calling.
3. Paul’s Ministry in Syria and Cilicia: After his visit, Paul continued his work far from Jerusalem, ministering in Syria and Cilicia (Galatians 1:21-22). His distance from the Jerusalem apostles underscores that his mission was divinely directed and not dependent on them.
4. Paul’s Reputation: Even though Paul was not personally known by the Judean churches, they had heard about his dramatic transformation—how the man who once persecuted them was now preaching the faith he tried to destroy (Galatians 1:23-24). We reflect on how God’s grace can completely transform a person’s life, as seen in Paul’s radical conversion.
This passage shows us that God’s grace can redeem and use anyone, regardless of their past! Paul’s testimony serves as a powerful example of how faith in Christ can bring about true transformation.
