What keeps a person steady when everything around them is changing? As we begin our new series, Psalms: Songs for the Soul, Psalms 1 and 2 take us to the gateway of the entire book. Psalm 1 shows us a life rooted in the unchanging truth of God’s Word, while Psalm 2 reminds us that even when the world rebels, God’s King is still on the throne. The Psalms teach us to bring every part of our lives before God and find joy, assurance, and peace in His presence.

– Sin often starts with what we allow to shape our thinking, then it begins to shape the way we live.
– To meditate “day and night” means to keep God’s truth in our minds long enough for it to shape our hearts.
– Spiritual stability comes from being rooted in a source that does not change.
– Psalm 1 reminds us that God can keep His people spiritually fruitful in seasons they never would have chosen.
– We should not judge the faithfulness of God by the appearance of one season.
– Without a settled source of truth, we are easily moved by whatever is happening around us.
– Every path is leading somewhere, so where we walk matters.
– The world may reject God’s authority, but its rebellion does not threaten God’s rule.
– The world may oppose God, but it can never overthrow Him.
God may be patient with rebellion for a time, but He will not ignore it forever.
– Our security rests not only in what God has said, but in Who God has placed on the throne.

A planted life is not a trouble-free life. The wind still blows, seasons still change, and difficult circumstances still come. But when our roots run deep into God’s Word and our confidence rests in Jesus Christ, we have a source that our circumstances cannot take away. Psalm 1 shows us how to remain rooted, and Psalm 2 reminds us why we can rest. You may not be able to control the season or stop the wind, but you can choose where your roots grow.
