Restoring the Witness Before Pentecost

May 17, 2026
Before Pentecost ever arrived, the early church gathered in prayer, waiting on the Lord and seeking His direction. In Acts 1:15–26, Peter stands among the believers and points them back to the Word of God as they restore the twelfth witness before the Gospel is publicly proclaimed. This passage reminds us that God often begins great works with faithful people who are willing to pray, obey, and trust Him completely.

Key Points:
– Peter stood in the midst of the disciples as a restored man, strengthening the brethren just as Jesus said he would.
– The early church began with 120 believers waiting on God in unity and prayer.
– God has never needed a large crowd to begin a great work.
– Peter did not lead with personal opinion, but with the Word of God.
– The Word of God always leads the church in the direction God wants it to go.
– The witness had to be restored before Pentecost.
– The man chosen had to walk with Jesus from the beginning and be a witness of the resurrection.
– The early church prayed for God’s choice instead of pushing personal preference.
– Matthias was chosen and numbered with the eleven apostles.
– Before the public witness began, God put the witness back in order.

Acts 1 shows us a church preparing for God to move. Before the crowds, before the preaching, and before thousands were saved, there were believers faithfully praying, trusting Scripture, and waiting on the Lord together. God still works through people who are willing to seek Him and follow His direction.
