The One Greater than Abraham Part 2

April 16, 2025

Last week, we saw Jesus expose the hearts of those who claimed to know God. They said all the right things: “We are Abraham’s seed…” “God is our Father…” But their hearts told another story. Jesus pulled no punches — He told them they weren’t just spiritually confused. They were spiritually corrupt. Their actions aligned not with Abraham or God, but with another father — the devil. They were resisting truth and rejecting the very One who is Truth. And now, in verses 51–59, Jesus makes His boldest claim yet. Watch to learn more!

Key Points:
Spiritual truth sounds foolish when you’re thinking in earthly terms.
People still mock spiritual truth because all they care about is this life. And that’s exactly why people feel like they’re dying inside!
They claimed to know God—but couldn’t even recognize Him.
You can speak the language of religion and still not know God. Religious exposure isn’t the same thing as spiritual transformation.
Familiarity with spiritual things doesn’t equal fellowship with God.
Familiarity with spiritual things doesn’t equal fellowship with God.
Their question—“Whom makest thou thyself?”—was meant to trap Him, but it revealed everything.
“Before Abraham was… I AM.” (v.58) Not “I was.” Not “I came first.” “I AM.” That’s not a figure of speech—it’s a declaration of deity.

Through these passages we talk through how Jesus didn’t just claim to be from God—He claimed to be God. He didn’t come through Abraham’s story—He authored it. He wasn’t just part of the story—He was the story. Revelation 1:8 says, “I am Alpha and Omega… which is, and which was, and which is to come…” The Great I AM stood before them, and they picked up stones. The clearest truth they’d ever heard became the most offensive. Hard hearts don’t stumble over truth—they fight it. They fought the truth...and lost everything. They held their ground and missed their Savior. Don’t miss the One who took your death—so you could have His life.
