What Is The Church?

September 17, 2025

What does it really mean to be the church? Too often, people think of “church” as a building, a service, or an institution, but Scripture shows us something far deeper. In this message, “What Is a Church?”, we begin Segment 2 of our This Is Church study exploring who we are as God’s people and how He has called us to function. Understanding the church is essential if we are to live out Christ’s mission faithfully.
Key Points:
The Greek word translated church is ekklesia which means “assembly” or “called-out ones.”
The universal church is made up of all church age believers in Christ from every nation and place.
The New Testament emphasizes the local church as God’s design for believers to gather, grow, and serve.
The church is often misunderstood, but Scripture shows us its true identity and purpose.
The church is not man’s invention but Christ’s creation. It is His body, His people, and His mission in the world today. As believers, we are called out, gathered under Christ’s authority, and sent out to make Him known. May this study challenge you to see the church not as a place you go, but as the people you belong to. Subscribe for more messages from our This Is Church series as we continue to explore God’s design for His people.
