Why Stand Ye Gazing?
May 3, 2026

Jesus did not call His followers to stand still and stare into heaven. He called them to move forward as witnesses. In Acts 1:9–11, the disciples watch the risen Christ ascend into heaven after receiving their commission to carry the Gospel into Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. But as they stand gazing upward, two heavenly messengers ask a powerful question: “Why stand ye gazing up into heaven?”
The same Jesus who ascended into heaven is coming again in glory. Until that day, believers are not called to stand still, admire truth from a distance, or simply talk about heaven — we are called to carry the Gospel boldly to a world that needs Christ. This message is a challenge to move from watching to witnessing and from hearing truth to living it out.
Key Points:
• The ascension did not end the work of Jesus, it placed the witness of Jesus into the hands of His people.
• But standing still was not the mission.
• Up through Acts chapter 7, God gives Israel a real witness and a real opportunity to repent.
• They needed to move from gazing to obeying. We need to move from listening to witnessing.
• He has not called us to stand and gaze, we are called to move with the truth we have been given.
